Savannah Guthrie partied like it was 1980-something while in the hospital giving birth via C-section.
“I remember being in the delivery room. I just was waiting for sushi, a glass of wine,” Guthrie said Thursday while guest-hosting Today with Jenna & Friends. “I just started calling people, ‘Come over, come see the baby!’ That room was, like, as if Mötley Crüe in the ’80s had been there. When we left it was trashed.”
Guthrie, 53, welcomed her first child, daughter Vale, on August 13, 2014, via cesarean section. She shares both Vale and son Charley, who was born on Dec. 8, 2016, with husband Michael Feldman.
The “Kickstart My Heart” rockers that she referenced infamously left a trail of destruction as they toured, as recounted in the 2001 book The Dirt, which was made into a movie for Netflix in 2019. Their hard-partying ways included throwing a bed out of a hotel window and setting a mattress on fire.
“We used — I’m not kidding — you know the urinal thing they have? I was like, ‘Get one of those, we’ll put a bunch of ice in it. We’ll chill the wine right in it,’” Guthrie said. “It was amazing. It wasn’t a used urinal.”
The show’s permanent host, Jenna Bush Hager, has given birth by C-section herself. She and husband Henry Hager are the parents of daughters Mila, 12, and Poppy, 9, along with 5-year-old son Hal. The former first daughter was grossed out by the idea that Guthrie drank out of the plumbing fixture.
“Well, how do you know it wasn’t a used urinal?” Bush Hager asked. “I believe Henry used that urinal in my room.”
Guthrie clarified that she didn’t mean the main urinal.
“No, not the urinal,” Guthrie said. “The plastic bin thing. You’re thinking I meant the urinal.”

Yes, Hager had thought she meant “the urinal in the bathroom.”
Guthrie appeared on the show on Thursday and Friday, ending a week that also featured Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry and comedian Leanne Morgan as co-hosts. The show has had a rotating list of people sitting alongside Hager since Hoda Kotb departed the morning series in January. Kotb revealed last month that she left to take care of her daughter struggling with type 1 diabetes.
